Dollar Stores in KW
Where’s the best Dollar store (or discount store) in KW? I mean one of those crazy big ones, that has basically everything you could ever need?
I’ve been to a few in the area and the selection has been a bit sparse. Yes they have the cheap glassware, miscellaneous party supplies and skin care disgusting smelling skin care products. They don’t have an insane collection of wrapping paper, children’s toys, funky alarm clocks…
I miss my trips to the mega-dollar stores in Toronto.

Tis the Season
The holiday season is starting, with its crowded malls, christmas decor and of course starting this Thursday the annual Christkindl Market. Yes it’s mostly for old German people and kids who have nothing better to do than be dragged to city hall on a frigid Saturday morning, but last year I checked it out and honestly thought it was pretty neat. There are performers to see, trinkets to buy, junky food to eat. But most of all love how the Kitchener City Hall gets used by the community from time to time, and that its design and layout are great for these kinds of things. December 3-6 @ Kitchener City Hall.

Nikko Nikko: Great Sushi in KW
Nikko Nikko Roll and Sushi
20 King Street East, Kitchener
Monday- Saturday: 11:30 a.m. -10p.m
The fact that I haven’t reviewed this place is insane. There are weeks when I eat at this place two or three times. I eat a lot of sushi. And when I eat sushi in KW, 99 out of 100 times, it’s at Nikko Nikko. This place has the best rolls in Waterloo Region by far and probably the best sushi/sashimi as well. Everything always tastes very fresh. Most rolls and sushi are served in really creative ways, the Caterpillar Roll, actually kind of looks like a caterpillar.
There are over a dozen rolls, so the variety is great, but not so overwhelming that I get depressed or always order the exact same thing. As an avid watcher of Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares, I think that the size of a menu is a very important thing in a restaurant. When I get to a restaurant, I’ve already made a choice, to eat whatever type of cuisine that restaurant serves. Don’t try to have everyone’s favorite dish as well as try to have numerous items which appeal to those with all type of dietary restrictions. Nikko Nikko serves sushi, rolls, sashimi, and a few dishes that complement these things, as well as a couple of choices for non-sushi-eaters, and vegetarians/vegans.
This place also has a special place in my heart, since this is the place where my sweetheart learned to like sushi, a staple in my diet.
I do have two comments about this place. First of all the service is very spotty. Sometimes the server is on the ball, attentive and friendly. Other times, it they don’t know seem to know the difference between a chopstick and sashimi! Secondly, I really don’t understand why they never seat people by the window. I like sitting by the window and I think it’s generally good for business as it makes the restaurant look fuller and more lively to those outside. Since this place is on King Street in downtown Kitchener, I think looking lively and full is a good thing. There are not enough restaurants in downtown Kitchener that look lively and full. By not enough, I basically mean there are none. (Let me know if I’m mistaken.)
If anyone knows a comparable or better place for sushi in KW, let me know, I’d love to try it out. But for now this is my go-to place for sushi.

Or movies.
“The Antarctica Challenge: A Global Warning” is a documentary covering the recent scientific findings of the community stationed in Antarctica. It has been invited by the United Nations to be screened at the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, where it will be seen by world leaders. There is also a screening at the Princess Cinemas where it will be seen by me.
The screening at the Princess is tonight at 7:15. Tickets are $10.

It is absolutely annoying that the Waterloo Public Square board now no longer posts events, instead posts a link to the events. So that now even if you’re at the Square, you need somehow access the internet before finding out what’s going on.
How does this make any sense? Why not let passers-by know what’s going on, as they pass by, instead of letting them know about a link they will forget about within the next two seconds?! Anyways, if you do want to know things that are going on, here is the link.
I haven’t posted in a while because life has been crazy. Also, my internet situation at home has been non-existant due to the death of my first laptop. Also, I am moving to Uptown Waterloo in December (adding to the craziness). This is exciting as I will be within walking distance to many of the places I love in KW and I won’t have to deal with shady people living above me who own a large and noisy dog and insist on vacuuming at 11pm every night. I really hope to write about the crazy adventure that has been finding a place to live in KW. Hopefully I’ll find the time some point soon. In the meantime, the Wonders of Winter: A Festival of Lights, starts this Saturday in Waterloo Park. I don’t think I’ll go until there’s some snow, because it’s not the same without snow, but this is the one event that makes me feel like the snow, slush, shoveling, and slipping all over the ice are all worth it, because snow is pretty and magical.
