CARNIVAL TIME!
I’ve decided that KW needs some sort of Carnival/Fair. It can be to raise funds for some charity, or sponsored by some sort of handheld wireless device, or brought to you by some local organization of some sort, or just for the sake of it. I think maybe September/October 2010 would be a good date to aim for, gives enough time to get it together.
The Carnival/Festival would require:
- Some sort of grounds to hold the carnival/fair
- Parking nearby
- Money to get the ball rolling
- Publicity
The Carnival/Festival should offer patrons:
- Cotton Candy
- Roller Coasters and other rides
- Midway games
- Ferris Wheel (a big one!)
- Haunted House
- Funnel Cake
Ok, so who do I see about making this happen?
This may or may not be part of an elaborate plan to satiate my funnel cake and ferris wheel craving.

I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s Friday and my work day is quickly coming to an end.
Seems like this thing called Oktoberfest is taking over the town. I don’t fully understand the whole pay $20 to get into a tent where I’ll stand in a really long line to buy a beer. But people seem to like it. I’ll probably just spend my $20 ordering a pizza from Pepi’s. And get beer from the back of my fridge. And not listen to Polka.
What are you doing this weekend?

Fall in KW
This morning most of us woke up to frozen dew clinging to the grass and white vapour is visible with every breath. Fall is in full swing and is a bit chilly this year. Autumn is definitely my favourite season, when the air is crisp you get to wear scarves and boots for fashion, not utility.
I found a really great photo blog called “A Year On The Grand” by two of The Record’s photojournalists, David Bebee and Mathew McMarthy. They post a picture (or more) daily depicting nature and stuff near the Grand River. Perhaps what The Record lacks in journalistic standards, competent new reporting, and pretty much most of what they do, they make up for in really pretty pictures.

Boa Nova: Meet Rodizio Meat
Boa Nova Rodízio Grill House
6 Charles St. W., Kitchener
Monday-Thursday: 11:30am – 9:00pm
Friday: 11:30am – 10:00pm
Saturday: 5:00pm – 10:00pm
Sundays: Brunch 10:00am-2:00pm
My partner came back to KW from a few months of being away, so we scheduled a nice meal at Boa Nova in downtown Kitchener. They specialize in Rodízio, a style of restaurant service in Brazilian and Portuguese restaurants, where rotisserie meat is brought to you and carved at your table. The meat is perfectly cooked, and is always hot, because they bring it goes straight from the grill to your plate, and since each portion is small, the meat doesn’t have a chance to cool down before you eat it. It’s also a buffet style meal, so you get to examine the meat for tastiness before committing to having slices put on your plate. You can also request a small or large portion size from your server. Although it was lunch, and there were only about three tables occupied, we were offered five different meats, which seemed like a good selection. The steak was so delicious, wonderfully seasoned, and so tender. Surprisingly the chicken was also amazing, perfectly cooked and so incredibly moist.
There is also a nice salad bars with seafood, veggies, and of course salads. But we were there for the meat, so I have to admit any vegetable eaten during that meal is now a dim memory. The fantastic finale to the meal (for which my digestive tract was surely grateful) is grilled pineapple brought to your plate still sizzling on the skewer. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. They add cinnamon and brown sugar to make sure it’s the perfect flavour. It’s so juicy and just a tiny bit tanginess and so welcome after shoving as much meat into your body as you possibly can.
All-you-can-eat rotisserie meats and pineapple and veggies comes at a somewhat steep price. $17.99 for Rodízio lunch and $34.99 for Rodízio dinner. They offer the buffet without the meat (i.e. the salad bar), but I don’t see why, this is not a place for vegetarians. It’s a good value if you can pack in a lot of meat. Even if you can’t I’d recommend it, I’d say the food is comparable to restaurants in the area that charge more, and for the novelty of the massive skewers. Also you’ll probably feel like you should give a good tip, since bringing giant skewers, which could impale people, around to every table is probably harder than carrying plates and cups on a tray. Not to disparage regular waiters, but seriously these skewers are quite huge. They also took requests for which skewers to bring, once we had tried everything, something I’m guessing they do when the crowds are slim.
