Getting around in Grand River

09Jun09

In 1998, ten friends banned together, to share a ten year-old car, save money, and make the Waterloo Region air just a little greener. Today, this group is known as Grand River CarShare, and it has a vision to bring significant environmental impact, while giving its memebers the ability to use a car at the fraction of the cost of owning one.

It’s not easy to live in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area without a car, but Grand Rive CarShare, makes life just a little easier for those of us who are lack a vehical. There is a one time $25 application fee, isurance costs $14 a month, and there is a $400 deposit, which is returned to you when you leave the co-op. The rates for vehicle use are very reasonable. You also don’t have to worry about maintence and flucuating gas porices (as they are included in the rates).

Other ways of getting around KW:
Grand River Transit
Hot Air Balloon
Canoe
Walking
Cycling
Horse and Buggy

Well hopefully this takes care of any transportation related problems readers may have had. Unfortunately owning a car is still the most popular option for getting around in the area, and I can see why. Many roads are not very pedestrian or cyclist friendly, and public transportation is often a painfully slow option. But Grand River CarShare is giving area residents a real alternative which environmentally friendly and cost effective.
