A while ago, I flirted with the idea of becoming a vegetarian. Although I am back to my meat-eating ways, I did walk away from the experience having tried a few new recipes and having eaten at a few new vegetarian friendly restaurants. One of my favorite vegetarian restaurants in KW is Lotus Tea House in Uptown Waterloo. Located on a cozy little home on Regina Street, Lotus Tea House shares its premises with the local Buddhist Community, which gives the diners the benefit of a peaceful dinning environment, with Buddhist literature to read while you wait for food.

SS850947Lotus Tea House is serves Buddhist cuisine, but they have numerous vegan options. Most omnivores probably won’t miss meat while eating here, because the dishes are flavourful and filling. Lunch is served from 11:00am-2:00pm and dinner is served starting at 5:00pm. The Garden Veggies with Vermicelli in Satay Soup Base contain juicy shitake mushrooms and lots of lightly cooked veggies. The soy ham is very close in taste and consistency to its non-Buddhist counterpart. The soup is a bit spicy, but very pleasant.

Himalaya Trinagles with Curry SauceTea time is daily from 2:00pm-5:00pm where teas and light snacks are served. The Himalaya Triangles with Curry Sauce are very similar to samosas. They are a fried wrap filled with potatoes and flavoured mostly with curry. These snacks are tasty but not particularly spectacular.

Almond TeaNo visit to Lotus Tea House is complete without having a pot of tea. Lotus Tea House serves about ten varieties of specialty teas, ranging from Oolong to Almond to Black Forest. Each pot is made to order, and can serve 2-3 people. Now the pot isn’t just hot water with a few tea leaves. Lotus Tea House uses lots of interesting ingredients such as large chunks of dried fruit, fresh ginseng roots, and finely ground almond. I haven’t tried them all yet, but my favourites are Ginseng Tea with Honey, and Fruit Tea.

    Hi,

I’ve been to the Lotus Tea house many many times, it is a really nice restaurant.

I live in Kitchener and I am a vegetarion for more than 25 years ….just curious to see if you have decided to be a vegetarian. My mission is to help people to change the diet or even become a vegetarian, so if you need help in your diet or cooking, let me know. I am very willing to share how to cook Asian style vegetarian/vegan food.

    Sincerely,

    Miranda Chen
