Healthy Food Choices in Waterloo

During my recent visit to Koh-i-Noor, I discovered Waterloo Region’s Eat Smart! program. Basically it’s a designation given to restaurants in the area which have healthier food choices, adhere to Food Safety regulations, and have non-smoking seating. initially I thought “Wow, what a great idea, next time I don’t know where to eat I can just choose a place from this program!” Unfortunately, despite the fact that I can name at least a dozen places in the region which would probably qualify for this program, only six restaurants are a part of this program. How sad is that? I’m assuming that restaurants either don’t know about the program, or know about it and have decided that it’s not worth the trouble to participate.

The program is being discontinued in 2010, according to the Eat Smart! website. I don’t know why and don’t care enough to find out. Instead I’ve decided I’ll compile my own list. If you have any suggestions, send them my way, and I’ll try to visit and include it on my list. Or if you have some resource which has a listing of restaurants in the area with healthy choices, send them my way please.  I’m thinking I’ll do a top ten, or running list. This list will not include fine dinning establishments due to budget cuts for this blog. Stupid economy.

  1. A few off the top of my head:

Exhibit Cafe in the Children’s Museum; Seven Shores Cafe by Gen-X; Classic Indian is Eat Smart!, so I’ll go with that; Al Madina in the University Plaza 2; Duke St. Muse and Duke & Queen; Shandiz in the University Plaza…

  2. healthy eating should be our top priority since there are many junk foods and foods with no nutritional value these days -`”
